Jose Napoleon Duarte had been president of one of the two oppossing juntas
in El Salvador's civil war since 1980. He gained control of the country in 1984 and within a couple of years the war fizzled out. Duarte had U.S. backing and instituted a number of reforms until cancer forced him to resign in 1988. |
