Rajiv Gandhi became prime minister after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi, on October 31, 1984. Though his succession was affirmed by a sweeping victory by his party in the 1984 elections, he faced tremendous opposition and was defeated in 1989.

On May 21, 1991, during a campaign to regain the post of prime minister, Gandhi was assassinated.
