Sgt. Samuel Doe was the leader of the coup that killed President William Tolbert. After the coup, he assumed leadership of Liberia, becoming
the first ruler descended from the native people of the region. In 1981 he promoted himself to general. In 1985 he dissolved the military government
and was elected president under the new government. Allegations of corruption and poor economic policies led to his overthrow and assassination in September of 1990. |
