Terry Fox, who lost his right leg to bone cancer in 1977, attempted to run
5,300+ miles across Canada in 1980 to raise money for cancer research.
He finished half of the trek, making it from St. Johns, Newfoundland, to Thunder Bay, Ontario, when he was forced to stop because his cancer had spread into his lungs. By this time he had already raised $2,000,000 for cancer research.
