Walter Mondale was born and raised in small towns in southern Minnesota. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1956. He served as state attorney generalfrom 1960 to 1964. He then served as a U.S. Senator until 1976 when he ran with Jimmy Carter and was elected to the Vice presidency.
Mondale served four years under President Carter. He ran for president against Ronald Reagan in 1984, but he was defeated. Mondale also served as ambassador to Japan from 1993 until 1997.
